DIY: Deodorant

Image
It's been awhile since I've shared a DIY I experimented with so today I bring you homemade deodorant. I'm sure someone I know reading this will think I've totally lost it and am about to run for the hills to live out my days free of shampoo and razors (I can think of a few who think I'm weird so this will just add to the list), but honestly, that is not the case. I still shave; I still wear makeup (sometimes...less so during the summer); I still use shampoo, although, healthier kinds. I'm not 100% hippie but I do have my tendencies, which I'm proud of. Peace. Anyway. I gave up using antiperspirants years ago and began using deodorant. What's the difference between the two you ask? One blocks/clogs your pores (bad) and one lets you breathe (good). Read here  for more. Basically, steer clear of antiperspirants for your health (say no to aluminum). Deodorant is much better. If you're still curious, just google 'antiperspirant dangers' or clic...

DIY: Tub Scrub

Image
I’ve really been enjoying getting into greener ways of keeping my house clean. It might take a few minutes to whip things together (if that long) but these are non-toxic and just as effective, or more, than the stuff you buy. Plus, they’re way cheaper. M y advice for most household cleaning DIYs? Buy a big thing of baking soda and a big thing of white vinegar (hello Costco!) and you’re pretty much set to make anything. Today’s DIY is tub scrub from good ol’ Martha. Tub Scrub by Martha Stewart 1 cup baking soda Several drops anti-bacterial essential oil (I used peppermint – she also suggests tea tree, rosemary or eucalyptus) 1 tsp liquid soap And enough water to form a paste Just mix this together and plop in the tub and start scrubbin’! It works. It really does. I was skeptical at first but thought, why not try it? Oh the relief! I’ve used the toxic stuff in the past, because, well, that’s what I grew up using but it’s made me sick (literally). And with bathrooms being not...

DIY: Face Scrub

Hello and happy Monday! Tomorrow is Valentine's Day . Do you love or hate V-day? I used to loathe it. My expectations were too high or too low, not sure which but I got to a point where I treated it as any other day, just a day. Of course, things have changed so now I enjoy it. But, no matter how you feel about it, I hope it's a good day for all. By the way, thanks for your comments on my worst first date post. It's long in the past so I can definitely look back on it and laugh (while shaking my head). Everyone's got to have at least one bad date right? Sad that some of you have had worse! I feel for you. Another BTW, I haven't announced the winner of the Morrocco Method giveaway yet because I haven't heard back from them yet (I emailed them). Sooo, if they don't respond very soon I'll have to choose another winner and maybe it will be one of you! Stay tuned. Boy, I'm chatty. Okay, now, for today's post. Sugar Face Scrub . I. Am. In. L...

DIY: ACV Toner

Image
Hey hey peeps! Hope you're ready and excited for another DIY, tried and tested by moi. Okay, maybe it's not that exciting. Today's DIY is using raw, organic apple cider vinegar as a facial toner. Now, I know some of you have used or currently use this method. Most recently, the twins shared their experience and so did flmom . So I thought I'd give it a-go myself. Let's talk benefits first. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is best when raw and unpastuerized in order to retain its full benefits, vitamins, nutrients, and enzymes. To know you've got the real deal, ACV will be brownish in color and have the " mother of vinegar " floating around inside; it's living. Don't be grossed out. This is good for you! ACV has potassium, iron, pectin (helps with regulating blood pressure and lowering of LDL, bad cholesterol), magnesium, phosphorous, calcium, beta-carotene, and on and on... It's also been known to help those with type-2 diabetes, regul...

DIY: Carpet Cleaner

The quality, not the longevity, of one's life is what is important. ~Martin Luther King, Jr. Happy Monday and MLK day! It's a snow day for me today. Well, sorta. I'm working from home. My bus doesn't run today because of the holiday and then we had a big snow storm (for here) blow thru that my commute would be particularly long that I decided to just stay home. We went from this one night: To this the next: The weathermen were right for once! It's so beautiful. Cold but beautiful. And it's better when you don't have to drive in it. We're just not equipped around here for such snowy-ness. But, it's been fun taking YS2 out to play. Everytime I try to make a snowman though, he kicks the snow. Sorry Frosty! So I'm back again with another DIY for you, the main reason for today's post. It's fun doing homemade stuff, I think. Glad a lot of you liked the makeup brush cleaner . Many of these DIY projects are so simple and cost so lit...

DIY: Makeup Brush Cleaner

Image
Hey-ho! In an effort to be a little more green and live a little more healthy, I've been doing a few DIY projects that I'd like to share with you over the next week or so. Many of my inspirations were found via Pinterest (what can't be found there?!) and I even created a board for such ideas. None are new; no doubt, you've seen, heard or even used one or more of these ideas. I decided to give some a try in my home instead of saying what a cool idea. I'm putting it in action! First up, makeup brushes. My source . I don't know about you, but my makeup brushes do not get cleaned often. I think I've washed them twice...and not recently. Frankly, I don't think much about them until I go to use them. So I put it at the top of my DIY-to-do list. ignore the q-tip Tipnut lists 7 different recipes to choose from. I went with option #3: one cup warm water mixed with one teaspoon castile soap. I filled a small jar and stuck a few brushes in to clean...

Happy Earth Day!

Image
Every day is Earth Day. ~Author Unknown We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. ~Native American Proverb I love those quotes - two of my favorites fitting for Earth Day, which is tomorrow, April 22nd. I posted those and a bunch of others last Earth Day . This year I’d like to share a few links, a sampling of sorts, that might be helpful and even fun, in finding ways to be green all year long . I haven't tried all of these yet but I'm posting them merely as suggestions meant to inspire and motivate. I figure any way to reduce our carbon footprint is a good thing, right? DIY - How to Open a Young Coconut

Image
This is for Annie and anyone else wondering how to open a young coconut. I couldn't find Yardsnacker's video on how to open one but this link by the Raw Guru shows you step by step how to do it, which is how we do it here at home. It does take practice but seriously, if I can do it anyone can. Well, except maybe those who shouldn't be trusted with big knives to begin with! You could also google for other ways to open coconuts (young or mature) or check out YouTube. And this DIY magazine from the 60's is a hoot! It's "for the practical man about the house." ha ha! Yeah, okay. But I certainly don't mind having a handy man, especially if he can crack open a coconut for me. :)
