A Green Giveaway

Good morning and happy March! Our weather as of late has been fooling us into believing it’s December still and not March. We’ve been having cold damp weather, including snow. Ugh, I’m so ready for spring. And spring makes me think of green things and St. Patrick’s Day! * Do you remember as a kid having all your food dyed green for St. Patty’s Day? Never looked appetizing let alone tasted good. Now, that I’m grown up and know a thing or two about food, I know that traditional green food coloring is bad stuff. The best green foods one could reach for (St. Patty’s Day or any day) is the whole, natural kind like spinach, kale, chard, collards, lettuce, etc. No chemicals, no additives, nothing harmful or weird. And one excellent way to get those greens is SMOOTHIES! Green smoothies…mm! Even kids love them! If you’ve never tried one, you’d really be surprised to find how great tasting they are (okay, sometimes when experimenting things can go wrong but follow a tried and tru...

flickr - Fortnight@F8 Once again the weather here is frightful. I swear we’re having winter in the spring. Thankfully, it wasn’t raining but it was downright fuh-reezing! We stopped at the garden to drop off spent coffee grounds and believe it or not, there were quite a few [hard core] gardeners out there. I was impressed. YS2 didn’t seem to mind the chill but this mama did! I’m a wimp though - I don't like being cold. I did start out the day enjoying this smoothie . Maybe that wasn’t a good idea on such a cold day but in my defense, I didn’t realize it was so cold until we left the house. Sorry no pic. Imagine a brown (chocolate) shake or see Sarah’s pics. They look better than I could’ve captured. So check this out. YS2 loves wakame ! Is that amazing or what? Papa-YS picked up some dried wakame and little YS2, who’s always up for trying new things, loved it. Wow! I said he’s got a more advanced palate than me. Awhile ago, over the Holidays to be more precise, I won a jar...

...of mice and men often go astray - adapted from Robert Burns, To a Mouse , November 1785 Hola amigos (I should just say amigas since there are more girlies reading this than boys I’m sure…)! Hope you all had a fine weekend. Me? Well, you can guess based on the title and opening line things didn’t quite go as planned. Before I begin, I’d like to say to whoever is charge of making weekends a 2-day thing to please consider 5 days. That would be really nice. K, thanks. Saturday started out as planned: busy. To get me going, I made my usual smoothie with banana, spinach, peanut butter, cacao, and other tasty things. YS2 likes this too so we shared. To spare you the play-by-play, we ran our errands and did our things. We did stop at an Asian market that just opened a little closer to us. And we did our part to support them by sampling a few veggie eats (we ignored for the moment the possible bad things in it [animal products were avoided, however]) and picking up a cute miso bowl fo...

First off, thanks for all the well-wishes for my ego and my knee ! I’m pretty much all better now. Knee is 98% healed. My scrapes are healing (ew) and there’s only a little tenderness, mostly felt when I first wake up. It was brutal that first day because after the post office I came back to my office and every time I got up from my chair I’d be limping around from it getting stiff. Not one of my finest moments but not one of the worst either (oh yeah, I got one of those but maybe I’ll share for another time). And just in case it wasn't clear, the hip-shaker dude did try to help me and asked if I was okay. I was too embarrassed to let him or anyone near me, plus the adrenline made me move lightening fast so there was no opportunity anyway. He's still clearly at fault though wouldn't you say? :D He probably had a good laugh about it all, I know I would and did! This morning I woke up with this RANDOM old song in my head. Why? How? No idea. This song probably predates some ...

Today I had a papaya strawberry coconut smoothie (thanks hubby!). Ever have one of these? They’re super good if you haven’t. Besides being yummy I wondered what the health benefits were. For some of you this may be common knowledge but for me I have a habit to just eat food without giving it much thought as to its health properties; I just know something to be healthy but don’t know why so today I decided to go to summer school for the day and here’s what I learned. Papaya is rich in antioxidants and minerals, which together help promote health of the cardiovascular system and provide protection against colon cancer. Here’s a list of other goodies it provides: · Carotenes · Vitamin C · Flavonoids (plant nutrients, “they biologically trigger the production of natural enzymes that fight disease”) · B-vitamins (there are 8 water-soluble B vitamins that have important roles in cell metabolism ) · Folate (helps produce and maintain new cells and ladies take note: it’s especially vital...
