More on Susan Boyle

Image
If you've seen the video I posted yesterday or seen it posted elsewhere because it seems to be posted E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E. from facebook to twitter to major news sites then you know who Susan Boyle is and the sensation she has become. I love her. I do. I hope all her dreams come true! But anyway, I was reading an article on her today that shared a little bit more on her. From that article: Boyle, a volunteer church worker, still has a long way to go on the show, but she’s become an overnight media darling in Great Britain. Since her debut, viewers and readers have learned that she’s from the little village of Blackburn in western Scotland, where local kids sometimes called her names and laughed at her because of her appearance and the fact that she lives alone with a cat. A local newspaper reported that Boyle is the youngest of nine children and attended Edinburgh Acting School nearly 20 years ago, but left to care for her ailing mother, who died two years ago. Friesen reported t...

Incredible

Image
I first saw this video this morning. Apparently, I'm behind everyone else since this video has been viewed nearly 3.3 million times. I've watched it several times now and have bawled each time. Of course, that could be partly my pregnancy. ;) I cry over anything. But seriously, this is worth watching...or hearing at the very least. If you have 7+ minutes to spare please click here . This woman is incredible and I want her to be my friend, including her cat Pebbles.

Recap

**SPOILER ALERT** If you're a fan of American Idol and haven't seen the results show yet read no further as this contains spoilers. Wow! Am I shocked! I was CONVINCED David Archuleta would win American Idol. I figured both Davids had just as many fans as the other but assumed Little David's fans, consisting mainly of teeny-boppers with cell phones on some sort of family plan that includes unlimited texting privledges, would be voting furiously and ultimately place him as the winner. WRONG! I was so surprised it was David Cook who proved to be victorious. I guess I was fooled by Little David's louder fans. I'm not complaining. In fact, I believed both Davids deserved to be in the finals and both deserved to win so I would've been happy either way with the outcome. I have no doubt that David A. will be making great CDs so he has nothing to worry about being #2. You know what's interesting? For my AI poll I put up, you guys predicted the right winner and the...

Raw Food on the March!

Image
I came into work today to find on my desk some pages ripped from a magazine showing a familiar face staring back at me. My boss told me he brought them in from his wife for me (she’s so sweet!). The pages I’m referring to is an article currently found in the June 2008 Food and Wine magazine featuring lil ms. Ani Phyo ! I don’t think this new issue is available just yet, except for subscribers but when it goes on sale go check it out – she’s on pages 94-99 – it’s mainly recipes but seriously how cool is that?! Go Ani! To have my boss’s wife think of me knowing I’d appreciate this article reminds me how grateful I am to have people in my life who are supportive of my raw food ways. I mean yeah, sure she could’ve kept the article to herself to experiment with these raw food recipes but I like the fact that she shared it with me (ha ha!). My hubby and I have been fortunate to have supportive people around us. I’ve heard of others who are met with criticism, weird looks, and grief becaus...

Observations

Spring in the Pac-NW has not only sprung, it has EXPLODED! I know it’s May now (unbelievable) but it’s been a real battle here between winter vs. spring, spring of course winning out. The obvious sign of spring springing are the cherry blossoms; they’ve been in bloom for quite sometime but now they’re even more beautiful with the trees fuller. All the other trees I see are green and pretty leafy. I don’t even recall seeing them bud. It’s like all of a sudden, BOOM! Green leaves! Time is just whizzing by don’t ya think? On a side note for any American Idol watchers…what in the world was up with Jason tonight??? I believe he was smoking some funny stuff prior to the show. Did you catch him yawning when the Top 4 came out and were being introduced? And then when performing he seemed a bit more “lively” and all around more goofy too. If he makes top 3 something is seriously very wrong. P.S. That is not my dog pictured - I don't even have a dog . :)

Grocery Store Questions and Other Raw Experiences

Image
I bet all of you raw foodies/JFers have all experienced at least once a stranger asking you in the grocery store what a particular item is that’s in your basket or what on earth are you doing with all that produce! Am I right? It’s happened to me a time or two. Sometimes they think we’re making lots of pies because why else would someone have all that fruit?! I’m usually asked about young Thai coconuts too. Questions range from “what is that?” and “what do you do with that?” and “how do you eat it?” Prickly pears are another good conversation starter or eyebrow-raiser. Today however it was all about aloe vera leaves . I was checking out the fresh aloe vera leaves when an older man on the other side of the veggie display asked me what I was holding. He was so curious he asked me if he could take a closer look then asked what I used it for and was it edible, etc. Very inquisitive. He was so excited that he had learned something new. He then told me that it must be working for me and to ...

Whaaaat?

Image
Today’s post is about American Idol so for those who don’t watch or don’t care I give you permission to ignore this (like it was needed – hee hee). I just have to get something off my chest… For those who do watch, I have one question to ask: Whaaat? Okay, maybe two. Why was Michael Johns kicked off this past week? He’s the not the best or strongest singer of the bunch nor is he my favorite but come on! I hope I don’t offend anyone when I say this but he got kicked off before Brooke White ?! That’s not to say she is a bad singer but she is B-O-R-I-N-G. And I’m sorry but sometimes the look that she makes reminds me of Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy . Anyway, I liked Michael Johns and think he should still be on the show but whatever - America got it wrong. I think Brooke should go next (can't believe she wasn't even in the bottom three), then Syesha . Syesha is a beautiful girl who sings pretty well but nothing will put me over the edge quicker than hearing her imitating a ...

Something Borrowed - Part II

Image
As you may have read from my previous post we like to frequent our local library from time to time. I’ve learned that not only does a library have books but they also have movies, documentaries and music! :-D I’m deviating from raw foods here to just share with you an interesting documentary we watched on DVD; one we checked out from the library. It’s referred to as the Up series. Maybe a few of you have heard of it but I’m going to assume that most of you have not. Hubby was familiar with the series because he saw some of it in college. I hadn’t heard of it, which is pretty silly when I think about it because even The Simpsons did a parody . I don’t watch enough of The Simpsons however to have seen this episode. It’s about 14 British kids who were seven years old in 1963 selected from diverse backgrounds (i.e. social, economic, race, etc.). They are asked various “life questions,” which at that age can be interesting and entertaining; then we see most of them again every seven year...

Sandwich of Champions

Image
My husband stumbled upon a great recipe for “ bread ” awhile back by Russell James . I have to admit I was a little weirded out by the list of ingredients, including herbs de provence . Never used that one before! Anyway, feeling adventurous one day we mixed up a batch. I say we because the first time this was made I was getting frustrated with mixing and spreading and making it more difficult than it needed to be so hubby came to the rescue. The second time, I managed to make it all by myself and it was a smooth and painless process! The aroma filling the house was amazing. It was nice and comforting, especially during the dreary winter. When assembling our sandwiches, we spread cashew mayo (you’ll have to scroll down the page for the recipe or just see below) and topped it with fresh avocados, tomatoes, sweet onions, lettuce and cucumber. Hubby likes it to eat it open-faced with a little olive oil and red wine vinegar drizzled on top. That’s good too. No matter how you eat it or wh...

Fake-achinni

Image
My hubby calls it "fake-achinni" but it can also be called Zucchini Fettunine Alfredo - raw style! Of course, his label is more catchy and clever than mine. :-D I've been interested in trying this dish for some time now and finally got around to making it (guess I had to since we bought a bunch of zucchini). It's fairly simple and requires only a food processor and veggie peeler. The recipe for the alfredo sauce I used sounded pretty good so I followed the list of ingredients. As is, it was too oily (especially the taste) for us. I'm not sure that a 1/4 cup was needed or at least that much. I think next time, for us, I'd only put in a tablespoon of oil. When it comes to the kitchen I'm not real patient sometimes so I didn't soak the nuts first as required. I just threw the pine nuts in and manually chopped the macs pretty good, then threw them and everything else into the food processor. To offset the oil taste I tweaked it based on our own preference...

Hey Buds!

Now that I've been mostly raw for seven months I've noticed that my taste buds have changed quite a bit. I realize that as one gets older (or should I say, "matures") tastes naturally change. Some foods you disliked as a kid you love as an adult or vice versa. But when you start eating more raw foods, in their natural state, you notice big differences. For instance, coconuts. Or as I like to call them, coocoonuts. I have always loved coocoonuts; the artificial flavorings and/or the shredded flakes you can buy in packages at the store. I remember quite fondly opening up those packages of sweetened shredded coconut and just eating pinch after pinch of the stuff. Before my raw journey last summer, I remember on several occasions throughout my life when I sampled some fresh coconut, always the brown ones. It was so challenging and messy getting those things to open! The coconut was usually flying off in another direction (watch out!). But once the coocoonut was defeated I...
