And so it begins...

The artwork (I realize this is nothing compared to what's possibly in store for me): What's not shown are the carrot slices so carefully placed in between the dishwasher door and counter.

The artist (I told him to smile for the camera/mama, this is what I got - that's peanut butter in his hair):

But with a sweet face like this how can I not giggle while cleaning it up (and take pics with pride first)?

Days like this I hope to cherish as they seem to only fly by in an instant.

Weekend Recap

>> Sunday, January 23, 2011

It was a good weekend. How about yours? On Saturday, I was looking at modern rugs when I got an email from Melissa of Contagious Health that I won her giveaway. I am sooo excited! The new Kris Carr book, which by the sounds of it is just so great and a book on vegan food substitutions. Now, that will be very helpful for me. Thanks Melissa! I know I’m going to love them both.

While hubs was out doing boy stuff, YS2 and I took a walk around the ‘hood. We had to take advantage of the no-rain weather (there was actually sunshine!) so off we went. By the time I remembered I had my camera with me the sun was setting so I don’t have many shots of our walk.

I like mossy walkways.

Recently, I received a sample energy bar from Caleb (gotta love that name! *wink*) of Adventure Naturals. He and co-founder, Chris are working to startup their company by raising funds via Kickstarter, which you can donate to help them on their way (they just met their initial goal but donations are always welcome). They offer raw energy bars that are all-natural, organic, and vegan and also, seasoned nuts.

The sample I tried was their Vanilla Blueberry. I’m a recent fan of blueberries so I enjoyed this very much. Besides blueberries, it’s made with dates, almonds, chia seeds, protein powder and sea salt. It had the right balance of flavor and texture (some bars tend to be pretty sticky, these weren’t). YS2, my Caleb, of course loved it! He didn’t even hesitate to try it when I opened it. When eating this bar, I honestly imagined filling my backpack with these bars for on-the-go or hiking or for one of our walks - they were that good and perfect.

They offer other flavors with more in the works. In the meantime, you can check out their video here or see in my side bar Adventure Naturals’ progress (click on it for more info or to donate).

[Updated to add: They will be available online starting sometime in March. If you're in Austin, TX they'll be available in various locations in early March. Details and locations are still being finalized so check their website often for updates].

Thanks Caleb! It was delicious!

The weekends sure come and go quick but fortunately, we got some things done and had fun times, too. I meant to make a batch of onion bread but that'll have to be this week instead.

Enjoy your Monday,

RIP Jack LaLanne - you were an inspiration to many!

Nooch n’ Booch

>> Thursday, January 20, 2011

isn't that just the sweetest face?!
So I just have to brag a bit about my cutie-patootie, YS2. He’s 20 months old now and is talking lots. He knows how to say GUITAR! It’s so cute! It comes out like gih-gih-gihtarh!Oh and he says “um” – guess who says that? :/ I need to stop with the conversation fillers (I say so a lot too). He also loves to point to certain letters and sound them out like O, A, B, C, and T. He is going to be an early reader, I think. Okay, this isn’t the bragging part (tee hee!).

I believe I’ve mentioned before his love of ‘nooch’ (term for nutritional yeast for those not familiar) but he seriously *loves* it! He loves food that’s made with it or is sprinkled on top. He’s even dipped his apple wedge in it. But his favorite way to eat it is for me to put a small pile on his tray so he can dip his fingers in to lick clean or better yet, putting his face in it and licking it up. This is hard core, people. Even I don’t do that! ;)

Well, the other day I got the nooch out to make some lunch for YS2. I didn’t bring attention to it but he spotted it immediately and pointed to it and said “Noo! Noo!” There may have been a soft “t” at the end of it, not sure. But isn’t that so cute?! He asked for nooch! He’s never called it by name before now. Awww!

For those curious, nutritional yeast is typically used in vegan or vegetarian dishes for a "cheesy" flavor. IMHO, it doesn't taste like cheese. Not the cheese you're thinking of. It's more of a nutty flavor to me but I can twist it around to saying it's cheesy, just a different kind of cheesy. Make sense? No? Anyway, it's got loads of vitamin Bs such as B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and protein plus, other benefits. And it's far healthier than real cheese. So there ya go.

Here's the other bragging part...

Kombucha (or ‘booch) – I love it. I know it’s an acquired taste and I didn’t like it at first but that was then. Anyway, I gave a teeny-tiny sample to YS2. Uh yeah. This boy knows what’s good! He asked for more - how could I resist? But just a wincy bit. ;)

Again, for those who are unfamiliar with kombucha it's a fermented "tea" using live cultures. Typically, it's not an overly sweet drink but some brands do make it sweet, which for some people this is a preference if they're not used to kombucha. I prefer GT's. Some people think kombucha is too vinegary. The health benefits are that tons of probiotics are in kombucha which help promote a healthy digestive system and help your immune system. You can learn more here.

So there ya go – booch n’nooch. Do you like either or both? What’s your favorite way to eat nooch? Have you made your own booch before?

I think it’s time to bestow the top-notch award, HiHoRosie’s Blog Fave, to someone to start off this year. I heart this person’s blog and her as a person. I only know her in blogland but she is sweet, friendly and kind, very supportive and the real deal. Her blog is a wealth of information too. She does a lot of product reviews and giveaways but her focus throughout is organic, clean and green, and healthy living especially when involving her youngster. She’s thorough in her reviews and honest. She doesn’t promote something just for popularity but because she believes in it. Her latest posts are on mineral makeup (just because it’s mineral makeup doesn’t mean all are good), which I’m finding to be interesting and helpful. Her posts, including reviews, are helpful even if you don’t have kids or are “in the market” for that particular product but some of these things might be handy in the future or helpful to someone you know. Anyway, my first HHR Blog Fave award of 2011 goes to Mommy Is Green! Check out her blog when you get a chance. You just might learn something new.

Over and out,

Roll Call: Here!

I’m here! I’m alive! Life has taken precedence so to say I’m behind on blogging is an understatement. So many ideas swirling in my head, too.

What I didn’t mention in my past post was that I was in the middle of a “vacation.” I took two and half weeks off work so family time was at an all-time high plus, as you regular readers know, I was still recovering from my illness then there were the holidays, which were beyond happy. Crazy and mad fun. Then vacation was over and it took some time to get back into a groove and into routine. Obviously, some areas will take awhile to recover. :)

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Maybe some of you are fortunate to have the day off (not me). I was thinking that even though I don’t have the day off I’d still think about Dr. King and the many powerful words he has spoken. Some are so powerful they bring tears to my eyes. Those words still ring true and are applicable today in many ways. I’ll share a few here and there if you don't mind.

We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now.

I’m still working on my dream board – like I said, I’m a little behind (due to the aforementioned reasons). When I’m finished I’ll decide how much of it I want to share, if any. Some of it is very personal but I know some people have been curious what mine looks like. We’ll see. ;) It did make me happy that some of you thought a vision board was a good idea too and even went on to make one for yourselves.

I think it’s important to remember you don’t have to wait until New Year’s to focus on whatever it is you want (defined as goals, resolutions, intentions, dreams, wishes, visions, your focus, or whatever you want to call it). Writing down goals or making dream boards can be started when you’re ready to make things happen in your life whether it’s now or New Year's. I’ve never liked the whole New Year’s resolutions thing although, I did seem to take advantage of it this year. I think because I was just so done with 2010. Again, it wasn’t a rotten year but there were some unpleasant things I wished to put behind me (easier said than done though). I love starting anew.

Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness.

One thing that’s been helping me this week was a helpful reminder from Kristen’s Raw’s recent newsletter. I’m wanting to eat more raw so she suggested in her timely e-letter to dedicate some time once a week to peruse through cookbooks (un-cookbooks in my case) and jot down recipes you want to follow and then make your shopping list. Also, she suggested posting a calendar with your menu so you know what you’re having and when but also to add to the calendar things you might need to do in advance of that upcoming meal (i.e. soaking nuts or dehydrating something). Simple but awesome idea.

I also need to work on prepping in advance to make mealtime easier and quicker. Bitt recently posted a helpful post on raw food subsitutions, which could prove to be helpful in a pinch at times too.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

Before I sign off, I just wanted to say thanks to those who say nice things to me. I have my insecurities that I need to deal with but I appreciate those random, unsolicited comments and emails that tell me just what I need to hear to keep going. You know who you are (if you're asking yourself if it's you I'm talking about then it is). I appreciate you.

Happy New Year, Everyone! Let’s make it a good one!

Looking back at 2010, it started out very rough for me. Many times I’ve been tempted to lash out here on my blog about it but have refrained out of respect for others but also because my blog isn’t the place for such negativity. Plus, even though I’m justified in my feelings and thoughts, I’d only sound desperate and vindictive. Not what I want in my life. Actually, that is one of the things I carry over into the new year: positivity. I want to learn from the past but not live in it. I don’t typically but it’s easy to get discouraged when feeling overwhelmed. So I take a deep breath and move forward.

It is fun looking back at other great things that happened over the year; things I’ve learned; things I’ve experienced. I learned to be more open and try new things, both in life and with food. With food, I learned that fresh blueberries are okay and mushrooms may not be all bad. :) In life, I learned that I’m stronger than I realized but also more vulnerable than I realized.

Also, YS2 turned ONE! That boy of mine is the most amazing creature I’ve ever met in my life. We call him our little Cherub. Watching him grow, change, discover, and learn over the year has been incredible! I know he’s learning from me but there’s so much I can learn and am learning from him. With him and hubby in my life I am truly blessed.

To start Twenty-Eleven on a positive note and to make it a great year, I picked up a small spiral notebook to keep with me at all times. So many times I’ve been somewhere looking at something, daydreaming, or whatever and have wanted to jot something down but didn’t have anything. This will cure that. But the big thing I’m going to be doing this weekend is creating a vision board.

Ah yes…the vision board.

I’ve seen it work. Hubs put this in action a few times and then BAM! Those very things were realized. Wow. It was just like that, too. I consider myself a visual person so having a vision board only makes sense. Positive, constant reminders of the direction I’m heading. Which reminds me, I should watch The Secret again for more inspiration.
Anyway, I have a lot of goals/achievements/good intentions planned for this year. I feel positive that this year will be full of change, growth, learning, and experiences. I feel stronger already - that I can take charge of the direction I choose to go and I’m ready.

Happy New Year!
