Weekend in Review

Don’t you just love weekends? There never seems to be enough of them I think. Ha ha! We had a lovely weekend here.


Saturday was GOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRGGGGEEEEEOUUUUUSSSSSSSSSSSS! Try that in a spelling bee. More like math – counting all those extra letters. One thing about the PacNW is when the sun is shining with few to no clouds, there’s nothing like it. We have so much green and then pair that with blue skies and water it’s simply amazing. It was in the mid 70’s (I don’t know actually – warm enough for flip flops and shorts) and a day to get out. And for one couple we spotted, to get married. Aww! They timed that perfectly because Sunday was cloudy, balmy and rainy. I missed out on seeing the beautiful bride – spotted her veiled head in the white Rolls but her bridesmaids were pretty in pink with a bright red flower in their pulled back ‘dos. May not sound pretty but trust me they were pretty.

Anyway, we took a long stroll along the waterfront soaking in the sun. YS2 was having a good time for sure. We stopped at a little café for a beverage but realized we’d forgotten our debit card and didn’t bring much cash. Well the sun was shining on us apparently as they told us it was on the house. Awesome! I heart nice people. We’ll be going back for sure.

YS2’s cousin and his mama came over for a brief visit. YS2 loves Jack! Touching his hair (or shoe), smiling at him while reading…so cute. I tried getting Jack to eat some “mac n cheese” (recipe below) but he wasn’t having anything to do with it. Oh well. YS2 snarfed it instead.

Cheezy Hummus
1 15 oz can chickpeas, mostly drained
2 TBS tahini paste (I used raw but toasted would be fine)
1-2 TBS soy-free miso
1-2 cloves garlic
½ tsp sea salt
2 TBS EVOO
3 TBS nutritional yeast
Cayenne to taste (optional)
Turmeric for color (optional)

Blend in food processor or blender until creamy.

I made this last minute so I don’t have a pic. But I made it w/o turmeric so it wasn’t all that pretty to look at it anyway. I mixed this with brown rice pasta and bam! Dinner served. Like I said, YS2 snarfed it. Another favorite way is to do as above but then add in marinara sauce and sliced black olives. Mmm…

Sunday was a day to stay indoors and play and read. We were also productive in that we made some goals. I know! Goals! I’m not one who typically sits down and makes goals. When New Year’s rolls around I don’t make resolutions. I’m not saying I wander about life without any sort of direction or aspirations but for some reason I don’t take time to plan things out. I should. I’ll put it on my to-do list. Ha ha!

Anyway, I won’t go into detail here about our goals but it’s great having a partner (my husband) who is motivated, inspired and a doer. I feel so optimistic and happy about what the future holds and look forward to the journey with him and Caleb. It’s been wonderful so far that I see it only getting better.

I have thought about carrying around a notebook (I don’t mean a laptop but you know, actual paper) to jot things down in. Get in the habit. Do you set goals regularly?

I’m long overdue for some blog recognitions. Ah! I’m feeling generous today so I’d like to pass along TWO HiHoRosie Blog Faves.
First up, is Lauren of Ginger is the New Pink. No doubt many of you frequent or know of her blog. She has an amazing outlook on life and her health and I love that about her. And I have a sneaking suspicion that if I knew her in person I’d love her even more. We seem to have similar tastes, humor included. She’s also getting closer to meeting her Starshine (love that nickname) in a couple of months. I’m so excited for her!

Next is Nelly of from nelly…with love… She has a big Big BIG heart and loves to share it with every living creature. She’s also got crazy mad skillz in the kitchie (probably the only time you’ll catch me using that word). Hear she makes amazing moonie pies! Her big news is she’s getting married to her love, John. She will be a bee-yoo-tee-ful bride! She’s also someone I can call friend and has an ability to make me laugh.

Both girls have great blogs and are definitely favorites! No doubt some of yours too. And these girls are under no obligation to accept, display, reciprocate or pay it forward this award. It's simply my own way of saying I like you and your blog.

Well, I have more to talk about but I’ll save it for another post for another day.

Buh-bye Summer! Hello Autumn!

So yeah, summer around here came and went in a flash. I’m sad about that but now that fall is here I love it. Well, mostly. What I love are the crispy, foggy mornings – I love to get cozy, have a fire, read books, wear scarves, drink hot apple cider or cocoa, breathe in the fall smells (fires, baking, and etc), pumpkins, holidays, and the list goes on.

The leaves are changing and already beginning to fall. One day, I would love to go back east during the fall, as I’ve only seen pictures. So amazingly gorgeous! I hear for some of you living in parts of Arizona and Texas, fall isn’t happening yet. Bummer. We get some fall colors around here but we have a lot of Christmas pine trees, which means a lot of green. I do live in the Evergreen State after all. However the street I live on has a lot of trees that turn colors (don’t know what kind of trees they are) and right now, they’re turning red, my fave.

Guess this means no more gardening – summer gardening anyway. Strawberries are done finally (they were d-lish while they lasted!). Sam’s been working on putting the garden to bed. There’s still the plan (hope) of a winter garden of sorts but that depends on critters. So far, they’ve enjoyed some of our seedlings and then someone else seems to have walked off with our lettuce starts. Nice. I mentioned before that we’ve got pumpkins – we’re letting them “cure” before doing anything with them. We also have neighbors still harvesting some things like zucchini and tomatoes, which they like to share with us.

Nelly reminded me about the harvest moon tonight/early a.m. so we’ll have to watch for that with YS2. He’ll love it.


Here we are enjoying the last bits of summer sunshine. Some of you have already noticed it’s my new profile pic.


On one of our walks, we spotted what I call the Skittle Tree. These little berries are small and colorful like Skittles (yeah, the candy). Not sure what they are but doubt they taste like skittles.


Moving on from all of that, I finally tried Go Raw’s original super cookies. I’ve seen these around but have ignored them. Not sure why. I think it’s the packaging honestly. But anyway, glad we picked some up to try. They’re so tasty! Even lil YS2 loved them. They’re like macaroons but flat and crispy. Great little snacks to have in your car or your bag or just to munch on while reading a book at home. :)

So any suggestions about what to do with pumpkins? These aren’t to carve but to consume. Got any good recipes for soups, breads, cookies, etc? Doesn’t have to be raw btw. The cooler weather is here so I’m looking to fill my home with the comforting smells of pumpkin.

What's your favorite season? Mine is summer with fall a close second for reasons listed above.

It's Spring!

Ha ha! No, it isn’t! When I step outside it’s very fall (a soggy one too) but I'm still seeing spring. What do I mean? Well…

Spring rolls, of course!

Okay, I’m a dork.

I love spring rolls though, with rice paper or collard greens. And I love that you can tailor them to whatever suits you. We start out with a yummy peanut sauce then layer on all sorts of veggies – typically broccoli, sweet bell pepper, zukes, carrots, cabbage, sweet onion and/or spring onions-ha! So whatever you've got and the more the bettah! Or however much you can get your wrap to hold. :)


I’ll admit mine don’t always come out pretty. Meaning, I won’t be winning any food presentation awards. They’re lumpy and bumpy (sometimes ripped - see the hole in it? And that one's just minor) thanks to the many veggies I put in them, especially the broccoli. But you know what? I don’t care. They’re just awesomely delicious! That’s all that matters really, right?

I thought about posting the peanut sauce recipe but wasn’t sure if that would be cool or not. I use my own adapted recipe from the one printed in the Becoming Raw book. What do you guys think about that usually? My thought is if it’s a recipe posted on someone’s blog I would show my adapted recipe with a link to the original source. But in the case of an actual published recipe I’m not sure what’s acceptable. So for now, I won't post it.

Now, how about adding a little spring to your step? (okay, that was cheesy too)


Pretty, IMO. If I could only find my camera’s battery charger I could take better pics but my cell phone will have to do. The orangey tinge goes with the juice though.

Made with apples (tis the season), sweet bell peppers, carrots, cucumber, and ginger. If I had parsley that would’ve made it even better I think. I tend to prefer my juices a little more sweet when first starting out but adding in some other greens would be nice too. It was tasty and a great kick-start to my day.

What’s in a name? And a mish-mash of other things

Hey, friends! It’s been busy busy days lately. How about for you? I mean with the unofficial end of summer and just this and that it’s been crazy. But it’s all good. Unfortunately though, that means blogging suffers (as usual). But that's life, right?

So, what’s in a name?

The other day I was reading my bloggy friend’s post, Victoria of Mommy Is Green, about how she came up with her blog name. It’s fun to read about how people came up with their “stage names” for their blog, twitter, or whatever, so thought it would be a fun topic here.


Not sure if most of you know how my name came about so let me tell you. Back when I was seriously contemplating a blog I thought, I need a name. I wanted something catchy and easy yet was “me.” I came up with some ideas, got some ideas from others but still I wasn’t sold on any of them. I thought of HiHoRosie but thought people would find it weird or something. But it’s the one I kept coming back to. I wanted to be sure that whatever name I settled on was one I could live with, one that didn’t label or box me into one category (since I love to ramble on about this and that), and one that wouldn’t be confused with anyone else.

HiHoRosie’s Place

HiHoRosie is a combination of nicknames of my first and last names. I think you all know my first name is Heidi but with that comes the automatic nickname of Heidi Ho. If you’re a Heidi it’s a nickname you’re just born with, right? Some Heidis abhor that nickname, I don’t. Not saying I loooove it but it certainly doesn’t bother me. “Hi Ho” is the nickname of the nickname Heidi Ho. I’ve also been called “Rosie” which is the nickname of my last name. If you know it, this will make sense to you. And of course, “Place” refers to my little spot in blogosphere.

So there you have it, the history of HiHoRosie’s Place. Woo hoo.

How did you come up with your blog name? Some seem obvious but maybe there’s something more to it you’d like to share.

Now onto a mish-mash of other things.

One random thought: I still need to fix my banner (the font) so it coincides with the rest of the blog. I keep meaning to but it’s obviously a low priority. Anyway, that just popped into my head.

Can you believe it’s middle of September already?! Where has the time gone? I love fall (my 2nd favorite season) but we didn’t get much of a summer here so it seems to have come way too soon. But since it’s here I’m getting into the coziness of it all, loving the crispness in the air and looking forward to Halloween. The rain I could do without for now. Please. Well, a little rain is okay but just a little.

Speaking of Halloween though, last year YS2 was so little that I didn’t really think about Halloween much. It’s not like I could take him trick-or-treating. But this year, I want to dress him up! We’ve got a few ideas we’ve tossed around as to a costume but if you’ve got some ideas for a 16-month old, please share.

I plan on taking him trick-or-treating. Not for the candy so much (bleh – if he’s going to have candy, I want him to have the GOOD stuff!) but for the tradition and fun-ness of it all. What do I do with the candy??? I’ll have to donate it someplace – I know some dentists’ offices take them. I just don’t want YS2 chomping on candy and I certainly don’t want the temptation around me but like I said, I still want to have fun with the holiday. We even got him a little candy bag (so little we’ll have to carry another bag with us). He actually picked it out at a garden nursery we were at. It’s a black kitty! There was a pumpkin one too but he favored the cat.

Sam just reminded me the story of the candy bag - while at the nursery, YS2 and I were off looking at Halloween decor while Sam was picking up some garden supplies. I showed Caleb the pumpkin bag and he then spotted the kitty one. Of course, he wanted to show papa his new find. When Sam caught up with us, Caleb showed him the bag while announcing "mine mine mine!" Well, in baby language. :)

Fall is also a time for birthdays! Both Yardsnacker and I have birthdays in the fall. His is in November and mine falls on a very special and cool day this year: October 10th 2010. 10-10-10! Purty cool, eh? Not sure I’ll do anything extra cool to celebrate it but I like the fact it’s an awesome date; what I like best is the recognition and birthday wishes. Don’t get me wrong, I love presents! But I don’t count on them to make my birthdays happy. Maybe just happier. Ha ha!

With cozy weather comes more baking, cooking and all around warmer foods. I’ve been experimenting with vegan mac n’cheese lately, using nutritional yeast (nooch). It's different, I'll admit to that. I tried a recipe recently that I liked well enough, YS2 sorta liked it (a few bites, yes and a few bites, no – might be the phase he’s in, hard to say) and YS not so much. No pics, sorry I forgot. But I’m on a quest to find the right recipe. I’ve noticed some of you have been posting pics and/or recipes of some so I’ll have to try some of those.

Have you ever tried sweet potato peanut butter fries? HOLY MOLEY! Okay, again, I forgot to take pics. I was too busy eating them but seriously why didn’t I think of this?! Peanut butter AND sweet potatoes? I’m a sucker for peanut butter anything (one reason I could never be 100% raw I heart pb too much!). I found the recipe by way of iHerb on twitter. Anyway, mine came out a little soft instead of more crispy-like but who cares? They were yummy! I think the reason they didn’t come as crispy is I didn’t have parchment paper. Even YS2 enjoy them! Duh. Here’s another version from Oh She Glows that I’d like to try too.

Yardsnacker harvested our first pumpkin! I’m so excited to cook that baby up and make some pumpkin EVERYTHING! Hey, it’s fall after all. Well, almost.
