Happy Birthday, Blog!

>> Saturday, February 26, 2011

Today is my blog’s 3rd birthday! Yeehaw! Ah, it seems like only yesterday I wrote my first post. ::sigh:: It’d be fun to look back at some of the old Blogger comments but Disqus overrode them and I’m not sure how to fix that (if anyone knows how to export/import comments from one commenting system to another I’m all ears!).

My blog and I have been through many changes and ups and downs over these past three years. I’ve also come in contact with some incredible people. You.

I want to express my appreciation for everyone who’s stopped by my blog, especially the regulars. I appreciate and love the support. So many times I’ve thought about hanging up the keyboard but I never can seem to stay away too long.

I have to admire other bloggers who blog regularly. See, I couldn’t even get today’s post up earlier! Ever since becoming a mommy (my greatest achievement!) it’s been even more of a challenge to blog but that’s okay; I’m actually not complaining. As you know, writing a blog is a time-consuming process and for those who manage to keep up their awesome blogs daily I am in awe. Well, except for Dooce. That IS her job (lucky).

One thing I do do regularly is commit a blog no-no. One is supposed to keep their readers on their blog and not refer them so much away from their blog. Can’t help it though. Too much good content out there. Too many good blogs. I like to share the wealth you could say.

With my blog, my aim wasn’t ever to be most popular, inspirational, funny, educational, have the most amazing photos, or even most comments (although, I do love comments!) because if it was I’d be depressed right now (*wink*). But seriously, my aim has been to share a little bit of me with whoever stopped by. So my blog’s all over the board with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I figure it's my blog I'll write about what's relevant to me at the time - some people have made it known they don't like that but for those of you still here, it appears you don’t seem to mind. Thank you.

I do have to say thank you thank you thank you for the recognitions I have received over the years. No matter who it’s from it’s always an honor especially when I see the company I’m with. Here’s the latest one I received from TreadmillReviews.net.

I've also enjoyed hosting giveaways. I don't want my blog to become all about giveaways but they're fun once in awhile and I love making someone's day. Can you believe my first giveaway was for a Vitamix 5200??? Yeah, it's true. How they found me or even decided on me to host I'll never know but hey it was fun.

Much of what I tend to write about is more fluff with some (hopefully) helpful, educational tidbits here and there. One thing about me is I’m all about fun and happy times – keeping things light and drama left at the door.

So where am I going with all of this? I don’t know exactly but I did want to acknowledge today’s milestone, albeit a little late, and thank you for being a part of it. You’ve encouraged me to keep going not just with my blog but with other things too.

When I first started my blog it was mainly about raw veganism and recipes and stuff. I still value those things (including the “stuff” – I’m so eloquent sometimes) and like to keep it present here. I’m not perfect with my lifestyle and eating choices but it’s important to me, I believe in it, and something I still strive for.

No matter how long I decide to blog I hope I’ll enjoy it every step of the way and hope to keep coming in contact with more amazing people. Some of you I’d even call friends even though we’ve never met. That’s the rewarding part in all of this.

I’d offer you cake and ice cream if we were all here celebrating but have a virtual one instead...er, cupcake.

xoxo

Nothing's Changed

>> Wednesday, February 23, 2011

I ran across an article today about how the US is (still) behind when it comes to parental leave. Not much has changed since the last time I mentioned this from another corresponding article.

Currently, the US has the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) which allows family members to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. A lot of families/individuals can't afford to take unpaid leave so while this act is nice for some, it's useless for others.

I will say that there are companies who have their own family/medical policies in place that involve paid leave but those companies are usually far and few between. I am very fortunate enough to work for a company that is flexible with schedules and is supportive of all of their employees' families' needs.

The recent article mentions that California and New Jersery are the only states who currently have a paid-leave program in place (bonus points for them!). However, other states are being encouraged to do the same and if so, they could receive federal help in return. In my state, a measure was passed in 2007 for paid leave but was never put into action due to a lack of funding. Maybe this could change things.

I hope to see more of a push in updating this policy for all states. We're one of the wealthiest countries in the world and yet one of the last to implement any sort of program to benefit families. And this isn't just for parental (including adoption) leave but also for those who need to care for a family member or maybe some time for themselves for wellness.

The last time I posted this there was a comment from one person who didn't support or believe in maternity (parental) leave. Unfortunately, all the Blogger comments are hidden by Disqus (grr) so I can't see the comments posted. Anyway, I recall this person saying they didn't support it because they felt that one should be prepared in advance for the arrival of their newborn plus they didn't want to have to pay taxes for something that wouldn't serve them (I'm assuming they weren't planning on having children). While I agree...to a point...this policy is more than that as mentioned above. But in the case of maternity leave, again, not everyone has the capability of being fully prepared financially or in other things in advance of their baby's birth (one hopes they try though). A little assistance never hurt anyone. And as far as taxes go, we all pay for things we don't always agree with or utilize. Some programs (taxes) are a waste while others I believe are necessary. A new and improved (paid) FMLA is one I would agree with. But that's just me.

Your thoughts?

I Think I Need Therapy

>> Monday, February 21, 2011

So I made kale chips again this weekend. And AGAIN they’ve been snarfed before being completely dry. Ah well. That just means they were tasty right? But seriously, I need help keeping my paws away. I just don’t have the patience to wait for such tasty things, I guess. What will I ever do when I make an ice cream cake or something?!

It'd be silly to think there'd ever be pictures...

recycled pic from last time
My cheesy kale chips consists of taking a cup of cashews (soaked or unsoaked – I’m typically lazy or forgetful so I don’t soak most times), a third cup of nutritional yeast, juice from half a lemon, half of a sweet red bell pepper, one garlic clove, one teaspoon of Celtic sea salt, half to a whole teaspoon of pure maple syrup (or agave), and one to two tablespoons of (filtered/spring) water (optional). Then blend it all up till smooth and massage onto kale pieces. I dry at 115 in my dehydrator until well, I never get that far. Until crispy dry if you’ve got the will power. :)

You know what I fear? That a recipe I’ve adapted as my own is exactly like someone else’s out there and I just don’t know it. So I hope I didn’t inadvertently swipe someone else’s recipe. Good thing I don’t make music for a living…

This weekend was spectacular in the weather department. Sort of. My only issue was it was a bit chilly (40’s). That’s okay, we still got out and enjoyed the sunshine. Yesterday, we went to our garden plus took a stroll through the dog park. YS2 hearts dogs so this was a real treat for him. He knows how to say dog (d-d-dog!) but usually when he sees one he prefers to make little howling/woofing sounds. It’s so cute!

Anyway, as we were strolling around, I’m bundled up in my parka plus gloves; YS2 is bundled up and layered underneath his coat, plus his hat with ear flaps and mittens because the breeze is cold! Pretty much everyone else is dressed the same. The more brave souls are simply wearing sweatshirts. Except one crazy, ahem, courageous girl who’s wearing shorty shorts. Uh….[robot voice] “does not compute.” I can’t even begin to fathom her thought process on choosing what to wear that day.

I need another weekend of busy in the kitchen because I have a growing list of things I want to try, many of which are courtesy of you. I just need to make a shopping list. I’m out or low on some very important ingredients. Plus I have to plan things around my baby naps and play time.

I had intentions of trying out a buckwheat pizza crust from Ani Phyo’s book but I have to admit I’m a little nervous to. I like buckwheat in things or when it’s sweetened up but as the star of a savory pizza crust it’s making me a little hesitant. My excuse for not following through is no flax seeds. I really need some of those. A definite staple. Anyway, I hope to try this recipe soon and will let you know how it goes once I do. If any of you have, how’d it go/taste?

My blog’s birthday celebration continues on this week. I posted all the giveaways at the top of my sidebar. Check it out and enter away!

I have more ramblings but I’ll spare you for now.

Toodle-loo!

Birthday Giveaway: Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil (CLOSED)

>> Friday, February 18, 2011

This is the last of my blog’s birthday bash giveaways but certainly not the least.

Now, what can I say about Tropical Traditions Gold Label virgin coconut oil? I’ve got three jars of it at home if that tells you anything. They often have great deals that are hard to pass up.

We absolutely love coconut oil. It’s a great multi-purpose oil from cooking to hair conditioner to (ahem) other things. I have a little jar of it at my desk to moisturize my hands.

Often we’re putting some in our smoothies and of course, we cook with it. Try using it in place of butter on toast or even garlic bread. So good! In fact, I’ve used it in waffles which were so good because it gave just a subtle hint of coconut without being overwhelming.

I will say that Tropical Traditions is a little more fragrant than others I’ve tried but this doesn’t bother me. I enjoy it just the same. It takes me to the tropics even though I've never been.

It’s certified organic, cold-pressed and unrefined so this means you’re getting high quality coconut oil that’s been processed naturally without chemicals or high-heat. Just pure coconut goodness! You can read more about it here.

If you want to hear more, check out this video: “How We Discovered Virgin Coconut Oil - An Interview with Brian Shilhavy, CEO Tropical Traditions

Birthday Giveaway: Biokleen Dishwasher Powder (CLOSED)

>> Thursday, February 17, 2011

I’ve been a fan of Biokleen for awhile now. I’ve mentioned them in my Top 5 fave kitchen things and I also won some nifty cleaning products last year. Their Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator is awesome – really, everything I’ve used so far I’ve become a fan of.

Recently, I got to try their automatic dish powder. I don’t have the greatest of dishwashers so some pre-washing is required, depending on the stuck on food (ew). So even with pre-washing some of my dishes could use some extra scrubbing. “Elbow grease” my mom would say. But you know I don’t have to do that so much when using the Biokleen. I still do some pre-washing but all of my dishes have come out sparkly clean – no washing a second or third time. Woo hoo!

What’s cool about this stuff is you don’t need to use a whole lot per wash because it’s so concentrated. It contains no phosphate, no chlorine, no ammonia, or other hazardous materials. Plus it smells nice, not chemical-ly at all and rinses clean.

I love being able to use household cleaners, especially in the kitchen, that are biodegradable, environmentally safe and non-toxic.

So there you go. Biokleen Automatic Dish Powder. Good stuff.

Want to win a bottle? Here’s your chance.

To enter, go to Biokleen’s website and tell me something else you’d like to try or if you have, something you’d recommend.

Please leave a separate comment for each entry.

Due to shipping costs this will be limited to the US only. Giveaway will end Monday, February 28, 2011 at 9:00 PM (PST).

Thanks to Biokleen for providing this opportunity!

Good luck!

Birthday Giveaway: Kroeger Herb (CLOSED)

If you’re not familiar with Kroeger Herb Products, they are a health product company based out of Boulder, Colorado and have been around since 1978. Started by Hanna Kroeger, she was often referred to as the “Grandmother of Health.” She was very accomplished in the natural health care field and saw a strong need to share her wealth of knowledge and her herbal formulas. She has since passed on but the company continues to share in her philosophy and commitment to providing healthy herbal supplements that work naturally with your body. Their products are all natural and do not include any fillers. Plus if you ever have questions about any of their products they are happy to help! I’ve only had positive experiences with Kroeger Herb. In fact, I’ve worked with them before, which you can read up here.

Up for review today are Healthy Gut and Turmeric.

“A healthy body starts with a Healthy Gut.” I think we’ve all experienced tummy/digestive troubles from time to time. It’s not fun. Healthy Gut is designed to relieve and soothe a “hot gut” (an overly acidic digestive system), maintain a healthy digestive system and proper pH, keep intestinal villi healthy, which means proper absorption, maintain intestinal wall integrity, and support a natural detoxification process.

It’s made with herbs including:
Chamomile – for calming and relaxing the nervous and digestive system
Spearmint, Gentian and Marjoram – been used for centuries to keep the digestive system healthy and full of vitality
Wintergreen – used to keep digestive system strong
Slippery Elm Bark – helps keep toxins moving through the intestines and prevent them from leaking into the bloodstream, causing serious health issues
Meadowsweet – for maintaining a balanced pH and muscle tone for efficient digestive muscles

(info provided by Kroeger Herb)

Now Turmeric, part of the ginger family, has been around for eons! Many of you probably have it in your spice cupboard but here it serves as a great compliment to Healthy Gut in maintaining healthy digestion.

Turmeric is one of those herbs you’ll want around for everything. It helps digest fats by stimulating the flow of bile. It’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Besides it helping with digestion, it has other medicinal properties you might find interesting such as an antiseptic for cuts, burns and bruises. It’s an antioxidant, too!

So Healthy Gut and Turmeric work great together but they would work alone as well.

Buy it:
     Healthy Gut $14.99
     Turmeric $12.99

To shop, Kroeger Herbs doesn’t sell their products directly but you can purchase any of them from Hanna’s Herb Shop.

Win it: a set of Healthy Gut and Turmeric plus a bonus book, "Ageless Remedies from Mother's Kitchen," from Kroeger Herb Products

To enter:  visit Kroeger Herb’s website and tell me something you’ve learned or another product that interests you.

Extra entries:
*Follow Hanna’s Herb Shop on twitter (if you currently follow Kroeger Herb that will count too)
*Like Hanna’s Herb Shop on facebook
*Subscribe to their newsletter (don’t worry it’s safe)
*Follow me, @hihorosie, on twitter
*Tweet and/or facebook this giveaway (separate entries): Enter to win a set of Healthy Gut and Turmeric from Kroeger Herbs and @hihorosie! http://bit.ly/gTqbme Ends Mon, 2/28.
*Follow me on GFC

One comment for each entry, please.

Giveaway is open to the US and Canada and will end Monday, February 28th at 9:00 PM (PST).

Thanks to Kroeger Herb Products for their generosity!

Birthday Giveaway: Strawesome Glass Straw (CLOSED)

>> Monday, February 14, 2011

I’m not perfect when it comes to being “green,” in fact, I’m far from it but I do try to be more aware and make changes here and there. Every little bit counts, right?

Like drinking straws…

Strawesome is in the business of creating reusable drinking straws made from the same glass that Pyrex is made from, so you know they’re made to last. They even guarantee it! Being the proud owner of a glass straw now enables me to help reduce those pesky plastic straws that end up littering highways and filling up landfills. I also don't have to worry about anything leaching into my beverage like with plastic.

I received my beautiful Valentine’s Day straw, which is so pretty in pink! It has a heart and decorative dots on it (should've taken a pic before it went in the smoothie). Each straw is handmade and truly unique. In fact, I loved my straw so much that I ended up buying a couple more plus a straw cleaner.

For it's inaugural use, hubby made me one of my favorite smoothies: cacao, banana and peanut butter. Mmm!

I’m still getting used to using a smoothie straw (they’re slightly larger in size) but I feel more comfortable knowing it’s non-toxic and reusable. And it's pretty - I know I already said that but it is.

Strawesome has a variety of styles and colors and types and sizes (whew!) even for kids, plus they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee on top of a lifetime guarantee against breakage. Doesn’t get much better than that. They’re also economical. When you think of the amount of plastic straws that get thrown out daily spending a few+ dollars for a glass straw isn’t a big deal. They have travel pouches too so it's convenient to keep one with you while out and about.

Visit Strawesome to learn more or to shop.

Now for the giveaway.

Strawesome is giving away a reusable glass straw to one lucky reader!

To enter:

Mandatory entry – visit Strawesome.com and tell me something you learned.

Extra entries:
*Like Strawesome on facebook
*Sign up for Strawesome’s newsletter
*Follow me publicly via Google Friend Connect

*what’s another simple way you live green?

Leave a comment for each entry, please.

Giveaway limited to US and Canada and will end Monday, February 28, 2011, 9:00 PM (PST).

Thanks to Strawesome for making this giveaway happen!

Hello my friends! In case you didn’t catch it my previous post, I mentioned that I had some fun things going on starting next week so today I thought I’d let you in on what’s going on a bit.

My blog’s birthday is coming up at the end of the month and I thought we’d celebrate. Since you are reading this that means you are part of the reason for the celebration. Next week I’ll have a handful of giveaways that I think you’ll like. Fun huh? My blog’s having the birthday and you’re getting the presents. :) Well, one winner for each thing.

I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to do it exactly – if I’ll post them all at once (a separate post for each of course) or a couple a day. Anyway, just a thinkin’ about that part still.

Something for you to look forward to and my way of saying THANKS for being a part of my blog.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Review: Rock Candy Life

>> Monday, February 7, 2011

I’m sure we all have had the same experience with buying shower curtains. Shower curtains that once you bring home and open them up you have let them air out for awhile because they stink so badly from outgassing. Ugh. Please tell me I’m not the only one. Heh, I know I’m not because Rock Candy Life wouldn’t exist if that was the case.

Rock Candy Life (isn't that a fun name?) is a company who has figured out a way to bring earth-friendly and chic together in a shower curtain. Cool, huh? This makes me happy because gone are the days of putting up a new shower curtain that drives you away until it no longer stinks (or you’re used to the smell). I honestly didn’t recoil from any pungent chemical odors when I opened up the package. Ahhh!

I first learned about RCL and their awesome shower curtains from another blogger. I was impressed to find that what they offer is something I didn’t even know existed (I don’t think about shower curtains much outside of the shower). These are all 100% recyclable, 100% chlorine-free, and 100% PVC-free. They emit no gas emissions plus, curtain liners are not necessary plus, they’re pretty and plus, they’re affordable. Earth-friendly, home-friendly, pocketbook-friendly, and nose-friendly.

They currently offer three beautiful designs:

Moroccan Luxe

Royal Luxe

Whimsical Birds (my personal fave)

Now, here's where I'd post some cute pics of my bathroom with my shower curtain up. Well, the shower curtain is cute but the pics are of poor poor quality which doesn't do it justice.

See what i mean?

I got new batteries and a new charger for my camera only to find out they failed. :( So, I'm on the hunt again for more; until then, cell phone pics. Yuck!

But trust me when I say it looks good; those wrinkles will iron themselves out soon enough. They also put their logo in the bottom corner of their curtains, which I thought was a cute touch.

I’m so happy to have been introduced to Rock Candy Life (thanks Natural Mommie) and I’m willing to support a company who’s doing their part to make this planet a little bit better.

Sweets n Stuff

Happy Friday! Hopefully your month of love is off to a good start.

Hubby and I recently picked up a couple of raw vegan desserts to try from our local market. Earth Cafe cheesecake (individual slices not the whole pie). Some of you probably have sampled these before but we usually passed on trying them because of the price tag. Justifying that we needed to celebrate something we splurged. ;)

I've tried one of Bitt's cheesecakes before and enjoyed it but have never made one myself. Maybe I'll make that a goal this spring. Anyway, before my raw days the typical cheesecake was never that appealing to me. I liked the taste sometimes but it was never my favorite and was way too rich and made me feel icky after (I don't say that about many non-raw things but cheesecake and ice cream were too much most of the time). I will confess there were some chocolate ones that were mighty tasty but definitely far from good for me. So in the beginning I was reluctant to try raw vegan cheesecake. I mean it sounds a little odd, right?

Hoooo boy! Yum! Now, raw vegan cheesecake I can handle. Oh yeah! It's so much lighter and of course, cleaner. And you can flavor it up in different ways just like the regular cheesecake.

Back to Earth Cafe's cheesecake...I really loved eating the strawberry one but then I love strawberries. Hubs liked it too. The carob one was okay. I'm not a carob fan so I wasn't diggin this one as much - that's alright, Sam liked it.

Eating these does make me want to try my hand at making one of my own but in the meantime, this was a lovely splurge.

Since it's Friday how about something funny? Sam showed me this video last night and I was rolling! Maybe you've seen Double Dream Hands but I'd been missing out! I could waste a couple hours watching all the parodies and mashups too. For those not familiar with this video it starts out telling you this is the 'front' version....there's a version seen from the back as well. Oh my.

Have a good weekend!

Weekend Recap: Busy in the Kitchen

>> Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Hola! It's funny. I had this post all ready to go yesterday morning but realized I forgot my usb cord and of course, none was to be found elsewhere. Oh well. I suppose now I can update some things.

Another weekend flew by but it was fun. Plus, YS2 and I were able to get out and enjoy a little sunshine.

My walking buddy all bundled up
Smile!

On weekends I try to take advantage of the extra time to get a little creative in the kitchen or just try something new. So this weekend I tried some new things plus one not so new.

First I made some lentil burgers - a good basic recipe that has potential with different spices. It was good as is; I mean we all enjoyed them especially YS2 but then he's always loved lentils. Sorry I don't have pics of them but then I didn't make them picture worthy so you're not missing out. Mine were a little crumbly than I would've liked. There are some other variations I want to try that look incredible.

I made Raw LouLou's onion bread. I've been craving these since she posted her recipe and it's been so long since I've had onion bread that I couldn't wait to make them. I've never made them before, hubby has, so I wasn't sure what I was doing (i.e. what they should look like or how thin/thick to spread them). Boy, they smelled amazing! I subbed the nama shoyu for Bragg's. I would've used Coconut Aminos but we were low. Loulou, I hope I did ya proud! ;) YS2 loved them! Time for some sandwiches with some avocado.

I made some extra cheesy kale chips; this is nothing new for me as I've made them several times before. Keeping kale chips in the dehydrator until they're done is nearly impossible for me, however I tried really hard to resist. I must confess a few limpy chips made their way into my mouth - they sure tasted good! Success though, I had crispy cheesy chips to indulge when fully dried. Now, if only I could make extra for others to try (I'm selfish that way).

And of course, YS2 enjoyed licking the bowl and the spoon - I'd share (yet another) pic of him in action but he's in constant motion so all the pics are blurry. He loves kale but it's still hard for him to chew it raw even with all his chompers but in chip form, oh yeah, he begs for them. But, who wouldn't with all that cheesy goodness?

Then I also made some vegan mac n'cheese from Megan at Healthy Hoggin'. I love mac n'cheese and seem to be making all different variations of it. Again, no pics but I wish I had taken some. Not because I made it picture-worthy but because it was just that good no matter how it's plated. I wish I had broccoli to add to it but instead I used green beans. Not real fancy with green beans but it was still snarfalicious. I increased the water a little bit and tossed in a little extra nooch to cut back on the saltiness a bit but otherwise, no changes. Well, unless you want to count the noodles. I used some weird shape that were veggie flavored. Oh and I skipped the baking part as I didn't have time. Anyway, it was a HUGE hit with everyone and can't wait to make it again (with broccoli)...and again...and again...
